I brought Jefferson to make his IC. What amazes me is that he is now 12 years old. I still remember him as a little toddler trying to walk each morning with so much effort. That was 11 years ago. Yesterday, I took him to the National Registration Center at the Anson Road. Within an hour, his application was received and he will have his identity card in a month's time. How time flies. I truly felt touched seeing him growing up. This is another milestone in his life towards adulthood. I am truly proud of him.

Dear Jefferson

I remember every morning at 6 am, you will be wide awake in your play pen. When you were 1 year old, you were always throwing your bolster to wake me up. I am sure you wanted me to start playing the memory card with you. I still remember those days with joy and laughter. Today, I see you a big boy with a big heart. I am ever so proud of you being number 1 in public speaking and gotten you in trouble for allowing the reporter to interview you. I want to be proud of you. But, I will be prouder if you keep your brother company. In many years to come, you and your brother must remain as brothers. Don't repeat the same mistakes like some of our family members have done. They grew apart. I smile whenever I see you sing, speak and talk. I wept when I remember the days when you were sick and mummy and daddy had no one to turn to but to pray for your quick recovery. This weekend, I keep my promise to make you smile. After all, you will not be in the same school with many of your friends. I hope you remember the good times mum and dad had given you. Perhaps you fight and argue a lot with your brother. Perhaps you love him too much to see him not do well in school. Stay focus and be happy. Mummy and daddy loves you the most.

Dear Cornelius

When you were born, mummy and papa were so happy. We knew you will bring us so much joy and hope into our lives. Over the years, I realized that you were gifted. Gifted in your own ways but papa has always wanted you to grow up to be a better person. You are now 11 years old. Over the years, mummy and papa have never given up on you. I hope you won’t give up yourself. I guess papa has been too busy with work. This is perhaps not a good excuse but I want you to know that we love you very much. It has never been easy to be at your age. Don’t give up when all fails. Hope is all we want you to have but work hard. I write to you because I want you to know that we all love you. Papa may have been hard with you over the years. Perhaps Papa didn’t do a good job to coach and guide you. Perhaps Papa should have spent more time with you. But again, it is not too late yet. Nothing is too late if your heart and soul tells you to go on. Be positive and we love you more each day. I love you a lot and I want to see you grow a good boy. Take care son and god bless.

Come April 16, Carol will be celebrating her birthday together with all of us. I decided not to join my comrades in Sarawak this time round so that I can enjoy my weekend with my better half. Perhaps, the years we have been together have been meaningful especially on birthdays in our family. Come April 16, I hope to hear good news from my comrades in Sarawak. I am not sure if we are going to celebrate a double celebration on that night but I pray we will. I celebrated my double birthday on 9 March in 2008 and I am ready to do the same. Let's see

A moment in time, a lifetime of hope

Over the last 3 years, the journey has not been easy. However, working with my boss brings me pride and honor that I am finally doing something that is useful. Many of my peers expressed horror when I decided to accept an offer to work with the state government and become the Special Officer to the Chief Minister. Most importantly, at 5pm 3 years ago, Penangites made a decision to "change". Change can and went. 3 years ago, the roads continue to be difficult but satisfying. I am sure there are many challenges ahead. I am glad my family is still supportive of my work. Tomorrow I celebrate my 43rd birthday. Tomorrow at 1240 am, the Penang state government was formed. 3 years ago, we were there and will be there still.

A new year and a new hope

It has not been an easy year for me for 2010. I am glad that it is over now and we can now look forward to 2011 with a renewed sense of optimism. I hope that the new year will bring more happiness to all and more focused to what needs to be done for the past 12 months that I may not have been able to achieve. Since my return to Malaysia way back in 1994, I have always wanted to do what I am doing now. I must admit that not many supported me when I decided to do today.

I have decided to revitalize my blog since it was left dormant in Dec. I spend more time updating my personal blog www.specialassistant.blogspot.com which I keep a daily update on that site. I am keeping that site private as it is really private to an extend of my daily activities being profiled over there. My 2 boys are growing real fast and Jefferson will be finishing his Year 6 this year. Although Cornelius is struggling, I am confident he will do better this year whilst Jefferson will further excel in his work and studies. I spoke to a dear friend John who now works in France. I hope he has found his niche over there. All of us didn't know he left to work over there but chatting with him via Facebook is delightful. Carol has been busy clearing up the house and I should be doing the same as Chinese New Year is 3 weeks away. I look forward to that. Do continue to follow my blog. Time to renew old friendship and make new ones on my blog. Keep it coming. I see many visitors from overseas and I am sure some of you are delighted. I am back ...for good.

Much as I wish to share anything about my family, I will do this one cos it is a very important milestone for me. Since March 1999, Jefferson has never left home. To me his participation with the tennis team at Perlis is rather emotional for me as this will be his first away from home for 4 days. I am not sure why I am a little sentimental but I believe I am going miss him very much. My little boy is going away and I am a little emo about it. I have to say that Carol and I really have hopes for him. In a bus, they will go to Perlis to play a tournament with other kids in that state.

For all dads out there, you will never know how important this day would be. I am sure we are all miss him. For today, a tribute to a little kid that has grown up. We love you very much son!

I must admit this space has been neglected for far too long. I am firm believer of taking the bull by its horns and steering it to my advantage. Today, I decided to revive this blog. Lots of things have happened over the months. Sometimes, I sit back and watch my 2 boys growing up and seeing myself growing old. I am glad I have had this time of my life to work with the most important man in Penang and also to be with the most important thing in my life - my family. I believe many things have changed over the years. Jefferson and Cornelius have grown so fast. Although they are getting older, I still see their "child like behavior in them." I am always glad to be able to listen and talk to both of them. However, Cornelius is my worry now. He has not been doing well in his exams since last year. I have tried many ways to help him. Jefferson has been assigned to help. Tuition given but he still continues to have problems in his studies. I am sure it is something that we have to work very hard to get it across. For now, it will be a long climb upwards. I am not sure where to start and I am not sure how to help. I am sure Carol and Jefferson are looking towards me to help Cornelius. I believe what is missing is his enthusiasm in his studies. Without that, it means next to nothing. I know this is not the right time to discourage him but to encourage him to do better.

Mother's Day come and go each year. I truly appreciate the support of Carol over the years and the spice the boys put into my life. Ever since father passed away since 1986, I have always been alone. From the day I left for Kansas, I knew the silence of my inner heart remains till today. I never mention much about my mother. After all, she is my mother and I do love her very much. Today I seek solace from my greatest hero, Mahatma Gandhi. His embalmed words of wisdoms have strong theraputic effects to my life, always. One of his favorite quotes if I may share goes like this - "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I forgive myself for the things I had done. I forgive the silence I had given to many in my life. I wish things would have been different. At least Mother's Day is a joy for the past 10 years with Carol. The boys are always loving us unconditionally and likewise. Thank you god. I forgive myself from today.

Revitalizing my personal blog

It has been awhile since I last updated my blog. So much things have happened along the way but one thing is for sure, our boys are growing up fast. It was a year or so ago that I kept this blog running and active. Seriously, I have neglected it somewhat and would probably do the same going down the road. So, I will now be focusing on my family stuff more. The update of my other blog is more of capturing things by the day. So folks, my deepest apologies on this. Nevertheless, I am sure the postings here will be free of political overtones. I will definitely limit that. Over the past week, Jefferson has taken part in tennis tournament organized by Dunlop. This will be the main focus for the next couple of days. On top of that, I will also talk about our pet cat - Elly. She has grown so fast that it is unbelievable if you see her latest pictures. Grown big and sideways, to be exact. As for myself, I am continuing my journey and of course Carol has been big on the FaceBook.

Honestly, I was looking forward more to the SXI Reunion Dinner than the Chinese New Year. I know that I will meet many of my friends that I have not seen for years. In fact, it was more of FaceBook that made this function so very successful. Today, I won't be talking about politics or even the economy. Today, this posting is dedicated to all my friends. Friends that I have grown to know and cherish. The reunion was well attended by 140 friends, children and teachers. It was heartwarming to hear teachers that you have not heard for years. Friends that you took for granted just because they lived on the other side of the island. It was a memorable night for all.

With my in-laws still in the US, a family vacation for the end of the year will be rather impossible since we need to tend to Elly and also to oversee their residence. I am sure the kids were not enthusiastic of this but we may just have to skip Phuket for now. A little disappointed after making plans to be there for at least a few days. I am thinking of swinging the family to Phuket while I stay back in Penang. Not too sure if that works out after all. However, good to explore and consider. I sense that it will be better if that happens but lets see what comes next. I am sure granny will be happy if we were to do that. After all, the best christmas is with your loved ones.

I was surprised that Cornelius and Jefferson sat through the entire Michael Jackson show "This is it" today. Being Cornelius' birthday, we decided to watch this show as it has great entertainment value as well as a day out with the family. I must admit seeing the 110 minutes documentary of MJ's rehersal brought memories and thoughts of the great times I had when I was growing up with his music. Only words of shock and disbelief that MJ is no longer with us. I had a tear towards the end. Not because I was sad, but I was happy for MJ as he has found peace. Peace be with you Michael forever. What is a blog without a dedication to MJ. MJ, you are the best and the greatest. We love you forever.

True enough, the syndrome of procrastination has set in on my personal blog. I spend more time on my book blog lately but I have kind of neglected this one. Nevertheless, what better ways to maintain it current while ensuring that I will put in things that matter most to me - my family. Tomorrow will be Cornelius' birthday. 9 years old to be precise. I am very fortunate to be with him and his laughter and smiles as well as tantrums are trademarks of little Cornelius. He is no longer little though.

As I stare at the above picture, I have a sense of emotions running through me. That was Jefferson's first day and little Cornelius was there to send him off. That was 6 years ago. How time flies. Cornelius has always been smily and timid when he was young. I knew this through his years of spending time together. From the day his first dip into the pool to the day he rode on his own on his bicycle, I felt very glad that he has grown up so very much. Tomorrow, he celebrates his 9th birthday. I know that he has always been looking for a good birthday but I know what better way than to spend with his mummy, daddy and Jefferson. I wish you well my soon. I know you were dissapointed with your exam results but at least you tried. I know you tried to explain how hard you tried and we all know. Papa can't spend too much time lately but I do my best to make you happy. Tomorrow , let's celebrate your birthday. Your birthday is always the best. I always look forward to it. Grow up my son. I bought 4 tickets for Michael's last public performance, literally. I am sure that this performance will be the last seen since his passing on 25 June this year. Never given myself any thoughts to even see this movie that is on limited release for 2 weeks. I am sure this movie will give great insights into Michael's last days of his sterling performance as the King of Pop. I am sure it is going to be a tear jerking performance.

I decided to take sometime today to sit and think of what has changed in my life. Other than work, I still have my lovely family and I am very glad that my 2 boys are growing up so very quickly. It is true that we spent lesser time together but at least today, we had a father and son talk before they went to bed. I am fortunate to have them both. I know Carol is one of the 2 pillars of the family. I felt very touched when Jefferson spoke to me in a serious tone about what is going on in his life. Both are starting to enjoy FaceBook. Using the application, they are cleaning the fish tanks , go on missions ...talk about everything under the sun. I think both of them have a connection with the internet. That I must say - it is time to let them move into it. I miss them when they were growing up....they are growing up so very quickly.

Remember Tamagochi? Stop lying. I know you know what I mean. The simple electronic pet that you have had once in your pocket and whenever you felt like feeding your electronic pet, you will bring it out and provide the relevant "tender loving care." Times have changed and today, the Internet provides an important element of companionship. In fact, Carol spends a lot of time "cyber washing" her fish tank using the interactive Fish World game. This games allows you to buy new fishes, sell them away and also wash the aquariums whenever it gets dirty. How times have changed really!Even my 2 boys are catching up to the game. Gosh!

I must admit that certain things in life is best enjoyed with your family members. It has been awhile since we all went to catch a movie. No thanks to H1N1, we have taken some precautions for the past 4 months. I believe Jefferson has said it well. We miss the movies and I decided to catch UP. A cute movie which I felt very touched with the characters and messages in the movie. Although the show seemed a little "fiction" more than a normal cartoon, but the human element such as loss of loved ones, the trials and tribulations of a young boy and the dream that one who has never done or gone all the way to do.

I did shed a tear or two at the beginning of the movie but towards the end, a simple message of hope and love continue to reign in the movie. I am glad Jeffferson and Cornelius enjoyed the show. Carol did too. Anyway, on Friday nite, we went out partying with Eugene Mah - my best buddy since Primary One. We enjoyed the music and of course, Bombay Sapphire. Great drink all the way.

Admist the threat of H1N1, Carol and I decided to venture out to celebrate Merdeka without the boys. They stayed at home but we decided to visit AutoCity for the celebration countdown. A moderate one which I felt was done in good taste. Of course, the crowd was much smaller and I don't blame them for not coming by because of the flu pandemic issue. We stopped by a Korean Restaurant and of course, we had our favorite BBQ. It was a great evening to spend the Merdeka celebrations. Simply the simplest and nicest time we had. We also had a great time with the Red FM crew and made new friends there. Ventured to a club at Autocity and partied till the wee hours of the morning. Smoky but music was great to dance along.

After many months of keeping my blogs alive, I just realised that I have spent more time on my private blog. I believe there is more to write about my family than ever. I see both boys growing up so fast and Carol continuing to be by my side. Today, a friend actually confessed to me that he and his wife have separated for about 2 years. I am sure that came as a surprise to me as I have not seen him for about 3 years. I am sure there are many reasons why a couple decide to go their own direction. I am sure we all have the reasons behind some of the successes and failures in life. I must admit my own relationship with Carol has been tested many times. For once sometime 3 years back, I woke up thinking that the world would actually crumble on me. She knew I didn't do things right but at least she gave me a chance. Many times I have recollected back on how important she is and continue to be an important element behind me. Put it simply, she is my big mountain. I am thankful I have her and my 2 boys....

A road trip to Ipoh

We decided to heard down south to attend my spiritual advisor's dinner in Ipoh. Obviously, my family is fully aware that I seek divine guidance from Kuan Yin during the past many years and thanks to Sarah, she introduced me to this community that worships Kuan Yin (Goddess of Mercy). Ever since then, I am indebted with the guidance given by the spiritual advisor and I am glad my days of darkness are now brighter and meaningful. Seriously, we need to seek divine guidance at times. Of course, relligion is an important element in making one's life wholesome. I am fortunate to have this opportunity to attend the advisor's birthday where I brought along my family to Ipoh. For the very first time, while returning back to Ipoh after dinner, I just couldn't handle to vehicle anymore and I let Carol take control. Is age catching up with me? Is it really that I am no longer able to drive long distances? I am rather surprised of what happened last nite. I just had to give up control to control but she in turn, drove well from Sungai Perak to Penang. We reached about 120 am this morning.
After all , we had a good time. God bless our souls and the many in Malaysia.

Sons at home for the whole entire week

Jefferson and Cornelius have taken an extended break since school will be out next week. We decided to do so since exams are over but H1N1 flu seems to be spreading rapidly. Considering the perils of the pandemic flu are very much of a threat to public safety, the boys will have their extended break and enjoy their holidays at home. I am not sure if its wise to even get them to go to crowded places. I for one believe that the country must shut down, similarly to the ones done in Mexico. I hope this pandemic flu will blow over soon. Otherwise, I can see chaos and uncertainties reigning throughout Malaysia.

A night out....at Smokey Jack's

It has been awhile since Carol and I went out for a short but romantic dinner. We did just that. This place that we went offers one of the best pork ribs ever tasted since Tony Roma's in Spore. Carol and I loved the pork ribs and we actually went after getting some advise from my boss' wife. True enough, the dinner was unplanned for and I was glad we went to makan. The restaurant ambience was unique. I must say the ambience was great, the price was right and of course, the people were nice. Fiona, who is the owner's wife talked to us intermittently about the place and we truly enjoyed the food very much. A must go place for those who wish to enjoy different food than the usual German or even Bulgaria food. We had a bottle of wine at half price. Only at Smokey Jack's....

Exams exams exams

Being the second last week before the school holiday starts for a week, it feels like I am taking the exams myself. I am sure Jefferson and Cornelius will grow up remembering what their Papa did whenever they had their exams. I know time is precious on my side but the weekend of NO PUBLIC FUNCTIONS is welcomed greatly. I am sure you know what I mean. I have been concentrating alot on my book/blog lately that I have left this site a little less focus. Nevertheless, I am spending more time sitting next to the boys. Getting them prepared for their exams is no easy task. Lots of negotiations on time to study.

I must say kids are kids. You need to push them a little before you can get anything done. I am not sure if other kids are this way but mine is. I love them too much not to help them. After all, when I was their age, I spent most of my time dreaming of what lies ahead. If only I had a mentor. I would like them to take me as their mentor. At least they can see me in action with my work while they work towards their dreams. They are wonderful boys. Carol is a great mother and wife. I will always remember that at times of despair and disappointments.

A country revisited

I was in Singapore this week. Progress is on the march in Singapore despite the major slowdown in the economy. The emergence of Marina Sands and Sentosa casinos by year end, I am very certain that Singapore will continue to magnetized the hospitality business in the region. Carol was with me during this trip. It was our first time taking a picture with the Merlion at Marina Bay. Met up with several of my childhood friends and of course enjoying the kind hospitality of being there to see Singapore's progress. It was indeed a great experience. I look forward to more trips there.

Goodbye to a great local storyteller

Very seldom I enjoy local Malaysian made movies. However, Carol and I enjoyed Sepet so much that we continue to watch the show whenever it runs on Astro. I am sure many would agree that the movie was well made and had an interesting backdrop of Ipoh. I am sure many Ipohnites are proud of this movie. To me, the most lasting impression is about the movie is about being Malaysian to one another. I am saddened to hear Yasmin Ahmad has left us. I am sure she has left behind a new group of fans like myself craving for more of her works. I am saddened and I hope we will remember Yasmin as one of the most impactful movie director in Malaysia. God bless her soul...

Family Swim

The weather is perfect. The skies may be hazy but the weather was just perfect. Carol and I decided we wanted to swim. Got the boys to come along and we are just goofing off in the pool. Cornelius is now better in swimming. Self taught and somehow he is also enjoying more now as compared to a year ago where he has this phobia of putting his face into the water. Enjoy the water scenes. I know I did.

For the past 2 weeks, it was a time where I made peace with myself. I made peace with a friend with whom I had a major misunderstanding. After all, life is full of challenges. Why add more when I can bridge the gap? I noticed lately Jefferson and Cornelius has been having little skirmishes between themselves. I believe I sense I have been so busy that I spend so little time with them as well as Carol. What is it like 20 years from now if they were all grown up by then? I guess it is time to cut loose the Internet connectivity and spend a little more time getinng myself to become more human.

I think it is time for me to start loving the things around me.

Courage

Courage comes in many forms. It comes with the will to be amongst the best and to be the best above the rest. Lately, I have started to believe that courage starts from the tender age when one is young. I was a timid person but my best came when I discovered dancing. Yes - dancing was my form of expression. Way back in 1984, the King of Pop influenced me to perform my very best on stage in school. Years later, I realized my two boys have keen interest in many things I do. Why waste this opportunity than to encourage them to stand up and be heard? That is what I did today - encouraged both boys to take part in front of the public in assembling Transformers. Cornelius courageously displayed his talents by not giving up when the chips were down and Jefferson displaying his talent by putting things well back together. At the end both were in the finals and Jefferson did a courageous thing - he let his brother start first while he stood by patiently for the next 10 seconds. However, Jefferson emerged Champion and Cornelius was second. To me, both were CHAMPS ! ALWAYS!

Heen Hiang actually dropped me a message. Remember his moonwalk? You showed us how to do it where many didn't. You see, Michael influenced me in many ways. The music, the dance and the appreciation of the finer arts. I have never thought I can dance or will ever match his style but I did. No kidding people. This is how Michael influenced me. I never knew I will have to write this on this day. I always thought Michael will live forever and sure he does. Today, Michael left us abruptly and the world is in shock of his sudden departure. Although I am sad, I am happy that his music and influence brought joy into my teen years – formative years. I grew up wanting to be Michael. He inspired me more than ever and I enjoyed doing his favorite moonwalk and I realized I did have a talent to dance. To that, whenever Michael’s son is on air, I would at least sit back, relax and remember the good old days when I put on my pants , gloves and do the MOONWALK. Who can forget his memorable moonwalk at American Music Awards and the Grammys? I truly will miss you Michael. I cried this morning for no apparent reason. I cried because you left us so abruptly admidst all the troubles you were in. I pray that you find your eternal peace while your greatest fan continues to spread the good word and faith in his work and life. We will sorely miss you Michael. Like what we say in Malaysia – HIDUP HIDUP…HIDUP MICHAEL (for just today!)

I truly believe that has been very patient with me over the years. The magic of Facebook

My whole family is now on Facebook. What came as a surprise that this new app seems to have an attraction on my family. I am not surprise when Jefferson actually struck some interesting conversation with me via Facebook when I was working last week. That is when I realized that my son has grown up. He asked me what was going on at Southern Thailand, what I was doing and many more stuff. These were questions asked and I somehow knew my little boy has grown up. I am glad he is asking many questions which are matured enough for a ten year boy to ask.

As for Cornelius, he has yet to catch on the Facebook fever. Until then, Jefferson and Carol will be the frequent chatters on my list. Anyway, do have a great weekend!

Cuti-cuti Malaysia...Taiping Night Safari

Before you start packing your bags and head off to a foreign land for a nice holiday, consider this. Consider the beauty Malaysian tourist spots have to offer before you even start thinking of booking a flight to a foreign land and get into the risk of catching H1N1 flu - by the way, it is now Pandemic Level 6. Scary yah? I decided that these 2 weeks, I will not be flying my family to some foreign land but instead let them enjoy the nice Malaysian hospitality and tourist spots. Obviously, I can actually plan things inpromptu and this is far better than being restricted by airline schedules and agent's itineary.

Last nite, I decided to accompany my colleagues from Level 28 to head off to Taiping Night Safari. This is Malaysia's very own Night Safari where visitors get to see animals roaming around after dark. Did we enjoy ourselves? Of course we did. It was months ago that I came by that area. I did venture into Kuala Sepatang but I didn't had time to enjoy the local seafood porridge. We decided to try the Seafood Light House Restaurant. Great porridge with other stuff included. After dinner, it was roaming around the Night Safari till 1030 pm. The boys enjoyed themselves alot. Seeing them sweat while walking is a sight for sore eyes. At least a reminder that nothing is better than to see things up close and personal.

The Woo Hoo experience

Old habits die hard. It has been ages since I took part in any game shows , win any prizes or even got the time to even do much at home other than spending time reading emails after dinner. Anyway, 8 years ago, I walked away from a game show not regretting that I stopped answering a question that my hunch told me I would screw up. I did just that. Today, I see little Jefferson doing the same. After all, it is his school break of 2 weeks and I can't seem to find the right time to take them for a trip. Well, at least tuition classes are ongoing but Jefferson took interest in this game show on Disney Channel - Woo Hoo Game Show. One needs to call in when a certain icon is flashed on a program on Disney and you stand a chance to win some prizes. Till date, he won himself a webcam and a gameboy game. So, what is next? We went for a dinner tonite and he spoke to me passionately about his prizes. I believe the boy is excited that he won prizes by just calling the Woo Hoo game show. I am proud of him but I hope Disney won't carry on this program after the school break. It is addictive and of course, funny. See his name appearing on list number 36.

So, do you agree that Jefferson is about to be a game show freak like myself? I guess time will tell. :)

While I was at a function yesterday, a friend told us that our condominium had 2 cases of theft / break in. I was rather surprised and I believe security has been lacking. Strangely, it is to my surprise that the theft happened at night and the thief came in through the balcony. Obviously, the guards did not detect them...a clear sign of hard times in the making. I hope the residents affected are safe.

I can't believe some of the things that people can say and get away. It is just like getting away from a murder and I am sure you may have experienced it before when wild accusations are thrown at you. We went to this movie without much expectation other than it was produced by the same director of the Shrek! flick. True to its style, this movie delivered witty dialogues and great storyline. Anyway, the caveat that came along with this movie is its 3D format. Yes folks - everyone had to dorne the special 3D glasses and I managed to catch a picture of Carol and the boys getting ready for the movie....Great movie and a 2 thumbs up for great family entertainment. I always love great dialogues, whether it is cartoon or ordinary movies.

Carol was excited to see him in person. As for me, Emmanuel looks great when he cooks and I assume he will continue to dish out great makans. I was here before. My College , my alma mater. I am always indebted to the College that I went to. I spent 2.5 years there and met many good friends - Kevin Colborn, Barbara Washington, Kenneth Low, Eric Aw, Chandra Arunasalam, and many more. If I were to be asked what I remembered about my college best, this is the building. This building was located on campus and pride itself to be the first Pizza Hut building in the world. Pizza Hut originated from Wichita Kansas and I have found myself full of amazement of this iconic building. I believe this is what the American dream was for Frank and Dan Carney - the founders. I took my Marketing degree here and graduated with a Summa Cum Laude. I was voted as one of the top 1% students on campus and was honored by the National Golden Key Society.

I was an extrovert in college. Involving very much in serving the student community, I spent alot of time learning about American culture. The late Tony Dao was my inspiration as he came from Vietnam as a little boy and he graduated with high honors and worked with NASA after graduation. The late Tony Dao passed away recently and god bless his soul. That news came as a shock to me through a friend I found via Facebook, Kevin Colborn. Kevin and Tony were the ones that indoctrinated me with American culture. Late night movies on Fridays and spent sometime with them at American pubs and friends. Along the years, we lost contact and FaceBook is beginning to bring us back.

One of my professor wrote to me the other day and he said "I have always wondered where you will end up one day. I am not surprised when you spoke so much about the Rocket principles and how important democratic socialism is all about in a country that you so very much loved and respect." Somehow, I was lurking in the corporate sector holding senior positions and eventually rising to the call of public service on May 26 2008.

Jefferson and Cornelius was busy preparing for the coming exam next week when I received a call from KK Hun to come by and collect 2 Durians! Wow! What an early start to enjoy the King of Fruits! Carol and I was about to head out for a Wolverine movie but we felt the Durians should be enjoyed. It was challenging opening up the durian with Carol trying to cut up the durian and let me pry open the durians. We did it in 10 minutes - what a good teamwork. Durians were great and we enjoyed them tremendously. I texted KK to thank him and he promised to give some more soon.

Early breakfast became brunch as we visited Food Master Bak Kut Teh along Burmah Road. Excellent way to start off our Sunday morning. Boys just finished a round of revision with me and I am giving them 1 hour time out. So, I can now update my blog. You should find out more about Bak Kut Teh...

As Jefferson celebrated his 10th birthday at Chili's, I must say May 11 was a great day. I have seen the big boy grow up and I am glad that he is growing up to be a fine young man. Although he is cheeky at times, I am certain that his enthusiasm as well as farsightedness will take him very far. I must say that we all love him. We were at the Chili's restaurant the other day and we had a great time chowing away. Another year has passed and I am glad that he is still the Jefferson we know but he is growing up fast. Last nite, I was coming home late from work and he actually called me to find out what time I will be home. I know that he misses me a lot and I sometimes think that I am so grateful to have my family caring for me so very much .... I must say --- I love them very much....

In view of the celebrations during Wesak Day, I am certain it was a great time for almost everyone to view life in 2 shades. The light and the darkness. I have told my sons the importance to be firm in their convictions and to be able to see the dark side and the light side of things. Over the past few days, we have seen friends fight amongst friends; families arguing over trivial things and worse of the lot - the unkindess cut one has to endure when things are suppose to be private but one chose to let it out in public. I am certain we go through life trying to advise one another about what is good and bad. Seriously, I have heard it all and whenever I hear it, I listen and understand. I don't take it to heart but there are those who chose the other path. Mouth is as bad as the pickles that went stale in the backyard and I am certain that he or she will realize the importance of being discreet and private. Save the words of saying that it is a new media , mah! You don't have to preach to me - I told you in my words and messages ONLY TO YOU! If that is so difficult, let there be light to shine into your life and let mine be happy and smily. I will not pick any fight with anyone over things that you and I don't have control on. All I wish is the light of Buddha to shine upon you and let there be peace and tranquility in whatever we do! So thanks for all the advise. Not that I don't appreciate it but you have gone beyond calling me "serving my masters" and "pathetic fool". I am not a pathetic fool. I walk my talk, HAVE YOU?

Next week is little Jefferson's birthday. I just had to put this picture up because I had the best moments of my life with him and the family. He is one heck of a boy. At times, I do see myself drifting away from them but deep in my heart, they are still my love and inspiration. This picture was taken when Jefferson attended his kindy for the very first time. How time flew by. I totally agree with Carol that I have changed so much. It is through the process of change that I realized the basic things are far more important. Come May 11, Jefferson will be celebrating his 10th birthday. I know it has been rather interesting to see him grow up and how much I have aged along the way. Dato Seri Tony Fernandes and YB Tony Pua. What do they have in common? Three guesses - don't try the one that says that Dato Seri campaigned for UMNO candidate and YB Tony Pua tried to name his new born baby Peter Parker Pua! Well, seriously, they are using the Internet to fullest extend. Yes folks! Dato Seri wanted to get folks to work under him. Yes -directly under him. I have seen how Dato Seri works before and how fast he makes decision but putting it on his blog and getting people to send their resumes to him is one interesting effort.

One of my buddy is on the lookout and so I decided to alert him and do some sales pitch for him. Well, so much for Dato Seri. What about YB Tony Pua? Well, the DAP has embarked into an interesting program- KNOW AN MP PROGRAM! I wished this program was around years ago. At least that would have determined my future in Malaysian politics either a small or big way. Right now, it is nowhere. Hahhahahahahahahahah!

It's 1 am now and I am catching a new item on CNN - The State of Union showing the seriousness of tracking the H1N1 flu virus throughout US. With the military helming the tracking efforts, you will be surprised the effort put in to monitor the spread of flu. As of now, 800 have been diagnosed with the flu virus and spreading wild throughout the major cities of the world. Curiously, it is getting a little worrying hearing that the flu is spreading fast. What is more worrying is that the flu can mutate as more and more are being infected and becomes more contagious. It's going to be a hard 2009 considering the recent recession coupled with this latest outbreak. Where do we go from here? How can we recover from this uncertain times? Only time will tell. Pray more.

I found this blog on IRB filing so very..unexpected. Especially coming from my dear friend, SSQuah, I am shocked that he has taken the path to submit his tax returns via the manual way. Of course, his choice to do so but I thought he would have done it the electronic way. Well, times have changed but SS prefered to do the normal way of submission. If I may, I like to advise him to do it earlier so that at least the congestion to the IRB server will not be a thing to ponder and get frustrated with. I had my time of submitting the forms via online and I am sure many of us would done the same too. Obviously, the best of the best is still the most prefered choice. So I call upon Mr SS Quah to do the same next year, earlier like 1 month before the end of the submission date. Like what Forrest Gump use to say " Life is like a box of chocolate, you will never know what comes next."

E-Filing

As usual, Mr Jeffrey Chew aka Mr Procrastinator, has finally panic and decided to do his filing online. With lots of help from my father in law, I managed to key in and submit my tax before the deadline April 30. I am certain that the e-filing has indeed came of age and today, it is really as simple as filing tax returns online 24X7. Beware though! The connectivity of the line could be slow and I would encourage all to do their filling way ahead of time. Don't be like me. I had to endure the pain of waiting for a slow line and filing the tax returns with so much frustrations. I am glad I have done that and thanks for all your help, Papa!

I was coughing and sneezing the entire day today. The boys had wanted to stay with the grandparents for the weekend and I wanted to spend time with them. Since that is the case, I decided to plan for our outing in the evening. What an evening it was! We had great food and drinks at Soho's. Laced with a little "kick" alcohol, Carol and I played pool for a few hours. We laughed and talked about things we have had no conversation before. For one, her dreams of becoming a Disc Jockey. I think she has the talent to do so and I will "sokong" her if the opportunity does arise. For now, we remain mummy and daddy to Jefferson and Cornelius. Shorter than a week ago, Carol was down with serious food poisoning that actually had me a little worked up. I am sure you would. I am glad she is back to her bubbly self. Caught some interesting scenes at the club. One is our drink, the flaming Lamborghini. Gezzz...it was a darn surprise. Flowing flames from the alcohol and into our drinks and we had to sip it -ONE GO.

So much for our vices. Hahah..looking forward to more soon.

It was very stressful weekend. I had to accelerate my VIOS to the max after receiving a distressing phone call from Cornelius. He seldom calls me to say anything. I term him as a boy with a few words but the heart of a gem. I am certain that what he has done truly tells me that he is a boy with a heart. There were times I didn't know whether Cornelius actually felt much of what goes on at home. Yesterday, his screaming and wailing voice brought me to realize that we are truly a family. I know time has been rather short for me as I spend alot of time at work and judging with the big day today, I had no choice to work over the weekend. Nevertheless, the call came and Cornelius told me that Mummy could not get up and she was on the floor - I rushed home. To make the story short, Carol is recovering and I am thankful that my little Cornelius has finally grown up.

Kid's biggest moment.

It was only 630 am when I saw Jefferson coming into the kitchen and greeting me. I never knew he was so excited about a certificate presentation on a Sunday morning. I am sure I was far worse than him. I heard of tales of me asking my family when they are leaving for any important functions a day before. I am glad Jefferson didn't have that kind of "eagerness". Can be very irritating if you were to ask me.

We reached the Kongsi at 850 am - 10 minutes before the official program starts and that Kongsi had hundreds of kids in the hall already. All I can say is this - we are very proud of Jefferson and he will continue to chart his future ahead of him. All one needs is encouragement. That is why we are suppose to do as parents. I know it is sounding very corny but there was one instance that I spoke to Jefferson very candidly. "If you think a black man can't be president, you are wrong. If you think you can't do it, you will never ever do it. Obama said he will and can do it and look at where he is today...the first African American President."

A night to remember

I can't really remember how many text messages came in last nite. I believe the entire mobile network was clogged up due to the by-elections at the 2 hills and 1 Batang. I am certain that many friends of mine went back to either Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang to cast their votes. It was a euphoric nite to remember and I celebrated it silently with my dear wife. We had a beer at a German restaurant nearby with my dearest Uncle. It was great as he was very happy with the results obtained. We are glad we had seen much change and we hope that change will continue to march across Malaysia. Who are we to say that change is inevitable when thousands at the 3 locations had faith in the system to help make that change?

Jefferson just got better after a day off from school due to having a slight fever. Nevertheless, I am happy to see him growing up but I wish he would not do that so very quickly. As for Cornelius, he too, is growing up fast. In no time, I will be dwafted by these 2 gentlemen. I hope they grow taller than me.

House cleaning day

Jefferson was a little under the weather. He complained of headache and a slight fever that came along after that. I knew that we had to give him some medication but in the process, he threw up. Ah...never mind...after all, he was not feeling well. I decided to do some house cleaning. Strangely, I never knew that after 2 week's of laying off not cleaning the condominium, the amount of dust has accumulated so rapidly. I guess cleaning up Jefferson's mess was okay cos I took the opportunity to sweat a little and do some house cleaning. He is fine now...well rested but I decided to take a short break before I work on their shoes after Carol cleaned them on Friday. It was a warm day on Sunday. Humid and hot but we have been experiencing rain in the evening.

Early this morning, all of us went over to my late father's memorial place to pay respect. Cheng Ming is a tradition that gets the young to visit the dearly departed ones at their final resting place. My late father was cremated then and it was rather simple compared to those who had to go into the grave yards in the hot sun to do the tradition. Anyway, I always get a little emotional when I am there seeing his urn as well as his possessions that we left in the the memorial place next to his urn. At least the boys are big enough to see the place. Anyway, do take good care of yourself.

Both boys' results are in and I believe they could have done better. Time flew by so very quickly over the years. Jefferson is now Standard 4 and in 3 year's time, he will be heading to a secondary school. Cornelius is now Standard 3 and I believe he has lots of room to improve further. I got back quite late tonite after being caught up with so much activities at work. Seriously, I will need to prioritize my work accordingly and I hope that by doing so, I will manage my time better and have better results at the end of the day.
It has been raining in the late evening but the traffic did ease up by the time I left for home at 630pm. I look forward to a better day ahead. Do take care .

Be mindful, I am writing this not as a politician nor a wannabe politician but as a concerned parent. My 2 sons have always seen political leaders as the rightful leaders that their parents voted for. Irregardless if these leaders were voted by us, they have always been taught to respect the elders and not to be kurang ajar. Seriously, the latest bruhaha about disallowing certain non-BN leaders to grace official school functions has come to haunt the general public. Excuse me, I pay for these folks to be employed and serve the state.

Even if it's a Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon or Lim Guan Eng gracing my sons' school event, I have never at one time boycotted any of these events. I find it immature and outright disgusting when I read of leaders acting so bloody immature. Sue me if you want but my sons deserve to grow up to understand that politics should stay out of schools at their tender ages. What is this? Preventing my sons to even shake the hands of the elected leaders? Oh - 2 sets of laws huh - one for the BN and another for the Pakatan. Come on lar. If BN has done no wrong, let the people judge for themselves. Don't divide and rule my children, I ask of all of you. Idiots do that. Of course, idiots are plentiful and lets wait for another round of elections. Lets see if you get yourselves voted in.

Selangor's elected leaders from Pakatan Rakyat are barred from
visiting government schools in the state, according to a directive issued by Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.In an education department list on who can attend official events in all schools in the state, Pakatan Rakyat leaders names are glaringly missing.The education department letter's list was issued to all school headmasters in Selangor earlier this month. [letter below]The letter from the district education department instead stated that the education minister has appointed 73 Umno, MCA, MIC and Gerakan leaders who were sanctioned to attend official events in the state's schools."Only these officials named in the attached list are allowed to attend official functions in the government schools in the state," the letter dated March 11, 2009 stated.Previously, all school heads were verbally told not invite Pakatan leaders for any official functions in schools.In the recent parliamentary sitting, a government official denied that there was any directive barring elected leaders of the Pakatan state governments, said Petaling Jaya City councillor A Thiruvenggadam, who gave a copy of the letter to Malaysiakini.DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said the letter was a failure on the part of the federal government to distinguish what is right and wrong."Such a letter further leads to the abuse of power, propagating corruption and thus this rots the entire system. This is an unacceptable discrimination against people who elected the Selangor state leaders," he said.BN's deep insecurityOn Sunday, Thiruvenggadam, who is also the PKR PJ Selatan division vice-president, said that he had followed Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim to the Highlands Tamil school in Klang.Addressing the Parents Teachers Association and teachers, Khalid donated a cheque amounting to RM120,000 and promised that he would get the Highlands developer to donate a fund for an additional classroom."Several schools in Selangor, including Tamil schools are in bad shape and in dire need of the state government's help."As a local councillor, I am often approached by the PTA and school headmasters to help them out with problems related to the deteriorating school's facilities."Now, the school officials have apologetically told me that they will not be able to invite me to their official functions. Day 4 - all good things must come to an end

Seriously, the rain stopped ever since the 2nd day and I am happy that the kids had a chance to enjoy what I enjoyed most - the sea. Through my experiences, I believe this is a change to our daily lives. 4th day was more of heading back to KL day and my stinging sunburn was really affecting my movements. Nevertheless, I think in a couple of days, the skin on my body will peel really bad. It was a great holiday. Spent only minimumly Rm400 per person inclusive of flight and makan / lodging. Why travel to Macau or Hong Kong when you have the best holidays around Malaysia ?

Day 3 - Snorkling Day

I must admit the rain on the second day of our trip to Perhentian left an uneasy note. I woke at 6 am because an hour before, it rained cats and dogs. I asked myself "Does this mean Perhentian trip would end up just swimming in the pool only?" I am sure that was not a good answer. I knew that somehow 930 am, we will all sit in the boat and off we go into the sea to snorkle. We did just that. Jefferson was full of confidence whereas Cornelius needed a little encouragement while in the water. All in all, the snorkling day was greeted with a bright sunny day till late evening where it drizzled a little.

Initially, a good friend of ours, PY Wong and his family were to come along. Somehow, he had some urgent matters to do but instead he sprang a surprise. He showed up so suddenly. The kids had a lot of fun. I flew a kite and we swam for at least 5 hours .... what a life! Enjoy the photos ya?

Day 2 - At the airport

It was 5 am when we all woke up and headed to the airport by 6am. Famously known as the chicken coop of Asia, LCCT was filled to the brim. Flights were taking off as early as 615 am to places that you would have never imagine AirAsia would fly to a couple of years ago but they are now. A man's dream now becomes a reality - now everybody can fly!

The flight was on time and when we reached Kota Bahru 55 mins later, rain greeted us. I saw Carol's face changing to a sheer disappointment as well as the kids. Obviously, I knew the rain

could just damper our dream cheap holiday but we were all very optimisitic. We were picked up by a tour van and we were on our way to Kuala Besut. The trip from the airport to Kuala Besut took almost an hour.

We boarded the boat to head to Perhentian and we were warned that the sea was choppy. It was really an experience as the speed boat that we sat in cut through the rough waves violently and poor Cornelius was screaming his lungs

away. Very unusual to see a boy of his age screaming but I guess all of us were.

When we reached the Perhentian hotel, we docked right at the front of the entrance literaly. Rain continue to drizzle away but I knew no swimming or snorkling but we instead hit the pool first. Water was icy cold and wind was chilingly cold too.

Day 1 - Heading to Perhentian

We left Penang on Sunday and headed towards KL by car. No thanks to Firefly which cancelled all their flights to Kota Bahru, I made a decision to drive 3.5 hours on a highway rather than snaking my way through the winding roads of the East Coast Highway heading towards Kota Bahru. Obviously, the boys and Carol will be having their very first trip to Perhentian and I ahve decided to get them there so that at least they will learn to appreciate the beauty of Malaysia before we start venturing beyond the shores of Malaysia.

We started our journey at around 10 am and crossed the bridge in a matter of minutes. Surprisingly, the traffic was smooth and friendly with the sun shining brightly all the way down to Kuala Lumpur. During the journey, I realized that it has been ages I had driven down to KL. Strangely, sleepy and dreamy while driving, Carol kept me away by giving me candies for me to suck on just to keep my eyes open. Of course, I made some contacts with Wilson but unfortunately, he was not feeling well.

At around 1 pm, we reached our hotel and we decided to leave our car at the hotel carpark - cheap and safe. It is only Rm2 per day and I presume it is better than having my car at LCCT terminal carpark which will expose my car to rain and sunlight.

We decided to walk around the Curve and we saw this cute restaurant - BubbaGump.

I am big fan of ForrestGump and this restaurant took the concept and make it into a restaurant that serves the best shrimp in town. Carol and the boys enjoyed themselves terribly and we had magaritaes for lunch!

At nite, we had the opportunity to meet Randy Lai - an old college buddy from WSU who is now staying in KL. It has been almost 12 years since we last met and I was glad that after the dinner at Thai Express, we went over to see the Dean of Wichita State University's School of Business - my alma mater. It was a great experience as we shared ideas and thoughts during the discussion. I had to meet him as he actually had a dinner function with other WSU alumis. I wished I was there as some of the friends that were there I had not meet for almost a decade.

Day 2 - tomorrow

After 72 hours away from the Internet, (I lied - I was surfing Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider) while I was away, I spent the best moments of my life with my wife and kids at Arwana Perhentian Resort. I will give more updates about the trip but I got to know my family better - especially Cornelius who turned out to be a rather timid person when it comes to boat rides on rough seas; Jefferson who have the heart of a lion when he jumped into the sea to have a look at it when someone shouted "turtles" and Carol who loved to sunbathe. I am back and more stories coming up!

Heading to Perhentian

It will be Cornelius', Jefferson's and Carol's first trip to a resort island. Since the school is out for a week, I have decided to shuttle them to fly off to Kota Bahru and onwards to Pulau Perhentian. I am sure they will probably enjoy themselves alot while I get away from work for just 36 hours. Obviously, the trusted BlackBerry will be humming away while my mobile phone will probably suffer the fate of having less signal. So - it is clearly cutting myself out of reach from the world, literally. Nevertheless, I look forward to this trip. The family deserves a short break no matter how short it can be. Obviously, Firefly was a major dissapointment as I will now have to head down to KL and catch a flight from the famous "chicken coop" LCCT and head out to Kota Bahru.

For now, we look forward to being here.

Iphone is finally in Malaysia

Looks like Steve Job's IPhone has finally landed in Malaysia on 20 March 2009. For those who are keen fans of the Iphone, please check out this site. So if you keen to "upgrade" your phone, please do so. As for me, I am sticking to my BlackBerry for now. Strangely, I am not an enthusiast of the IPhone but somehow the photographs taken using this phone are of high quality. Hence, I am not surprised that many Apple fans will testify the good product that Apple has come out with.

Declaration ...

I have been procratinating on filling up the 2 forms - one for the coming taxes and another for the declaration of my assets to my employer. I guess these two seems to have the least priority right now but somehow I have do it. So I better do something before March 31. So, I better do something about it rather than sitting and looking at the forms. Anyway, the week started simple. I have started to go on a simple diet with more watch on the quality of food I am taking. Of which, balanced meal is now prefered. This is to help me to get more power of the food I eat - rather than just eating for the sake of eating.

Carol and I started the morning of my birthday not on a very good note. Guess I got carried away about putting status on the FaceBook to be too much political than ever. I guess I got carried away because of that....nevertheless, I decided to spend a nice evening with the family and went for a movie - Marley and me. I didn't expect much from this movie but ended having a teary session towards the end of the show. It is about a man and his best friend - Marley the dog and how his family grew and accepted Marley as part of the family. I know I wouldn't want to spoil the storyline of the story. Suggest you see the show....this week I saw 2 movies of a different kind - Slumdog Millionaire and Marley and Me. Great movies and it gave me a fuzzy feeling to the show. You must watch them.

Swensen's

I am looking forward to having a great meal tonite at Swensen's. After a long dissapearance act from the Penang scene, Swensen is back at Gurney Plaza's new wing. I went with Carol on our first date at the Marina Bay area - Batu Feringghi. The place closed down years ago but since it is my birthday today, I decided to visit the place for dinner tonite. I am looking forward to it .... anyway, thanks for all the well wishers. Another year older, another year wiser - I hope. I look forward to a short vacation next week at the Perhentian since school is out for a week. Got approval for 4 days leave and I will definitely be heading there. Not sure what to expect other than sunburn and a great family time with the kids and Carol.

Once upon a time, I took Carol's challenge to take part in a game show. Never did I know that the game show actually changed my life. Well of course, for those who knew me, it was really a defining moment for me and I took pride to have at least survived to at least winning some sizable money. Tonite, I had the opportunity to watch a pleasant movie with Carol at home. Sure, apart from visiting Batu Feringghi to get a long deserved supply of "movies" (please don't report me to FINAS), I decided to buy 2 movies - Slumdog Millionaire and my all time favorite - Gandhi. Of course, I also had to remind myself that what I write on my blog could actually put me in trouble but I guess there is a story to tell here.

I am not going to be a spoiler of the Slumdog Millionaire if you have yet to watch it, but I am sure that many of my friends would swear that they have had the opportunity to see me in action at the Season 5 of Who Wants to be A Millionaire. Of course, I was one of the winners for that season but I will leave it as it is, a winner.

Slumdog Millionaire was a great movie. Why? Simply, it was genuinely pleasant to watch the ploy unfolding from answering questions from each of the questions asked at the game show. I knew it was difficult for me then and I must admit I have had a great opportunity to be at the show. Seriously, someone asked me last week - what made a difference in my life. I had these 5 things to share - my late father, my love of my life - Carol, my grandmother who gave me a lease of life, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and of course walking my talk.

Seriously, winning isn't everything. I won big and I lost big too. Of course, we tend to make mistakes in life. The movie actually had a great message - never lose sight of what you love most and you must always be willing to take the risks that you have always dreamt of. I love Carol very much and tonite, I reminded myself how important it was for me and her - standing on the fields of Han Chiang and only hanging to one belief that everyone of us have a chance to change.

You must watch Slumdog. You must see the show to really appreciate the message. So, in the meantime, take good care of yourself and of course, I will never tell you how much I won.....go ask around.
